Does laser treatment have radiation effects?

A laser is a device that emits light by stimulating a lasing material to produce amplified particles of light. These particles are amplified within a resonant cavity and then emitted from the laser at a specific wavelength for medical treatments. For instance, the wavelength of a carbon dioxide (CO2) laser is 10,600 nm, which falls in the far-infrared range; the wavelength of an erbium (Er:YAG) laser is 2,940 nm, in the infrared range; a YAG laser has a wavelength of 1,064 nm, in the near-infrared range; and dye lasers have wavelengths of 585 nm or 595 nm, in the visible light range (400-800 nm).

These lasers emit light, not ionizing radiation like X-rays, and thus do not penetrate body tissues or cause radiation exposure to the body. However, it is important to note that many lasers produce intense light that can cause burning of tissues. When this light is in the non-visible spectrum, people might neglect proper protection, especially for their eyes. Therefore, during laser treatments, both the medical staff and the patient should take precautions to protect their eyes. Doctors should wear protective goggles, and patients should keep their eyes closed to prevent laser exposure to the eyes.
